For information about Olympic Lutherhaven and the Bible Camp please go to www.olympiclutherhaven.org where you will find application forms (soon to be updated for 2011) and pictures from various camp sessions of the past. “All Church Camp” is a virtually all volunteer overnight Bible Camp put on for children from grades 3 through 8 for one week at Olympic Lutherhaven. The only paid positions are the camp director and the lifeguard(s). Our goal is to provide an inexpensive fun week at camp with great food, great fellowship with new and old friends, and a spiritually growing experience for both the campers and the staff. Local Lutheran Pastors and Youth Leaders provide Bible Study opportunities including questions and answer sessions.

= The tentative dates for All Church Camp are either July 30 through August 4, 2011, (our first choice) or August 5-11, 2011 (second choice). The dates are tentative until approved by the Olympic Lutherhaven Board. Please contact Mandy Harter, Camp Director, by either phone 360-731-6312 or email at lutherhavenallchurchcamp@hotmail.com if you are interested in positions as either a counselor or kitchen help. Pastor Jonathan and Robin Long are doing their best to ensure SLC Youth activities for the summer of 2011 do not interfere with you being a counselor at All Church Camp in 2011. We plan to use the BLOG again to let you know of the final approved dates and to help keep All Church Camp in your thoughts.
Thank you from the All Church Camp Committee!

Rally Day and a few Events

Rally Day is this weekend. After a car ride that lasted about four hours, we arrived at the Immanuel Baptist Church, near downtown Vancouver, where we stayed the remainder of the trip alongside a total of 60 kids from several other churches including ones from Chicago, Olympia and British Columbia itself. The church acted as a home base that we came back to everyday after our ministry sites. Here’s an outline of our daily schedule from Monday to Thursday:

At 7:00, everyone woke up, ate breakfast, did a small devotional and left for ministry sites around 9:00. Between 9:30 and 3:30, all 60 of us were split into about seven crews and participated and helped out at various ministry sites around the city. The ministries ranged from doing yard work, to helping out at kid’s clubs, to leading worship services. These same crews also took a turn at some time during our stay cooking breakfast, dinner and doing a campus cleanup. After ministry sites, every crew headed to off-site showers and then back to the church for free time until dinner at 5:30. Following dinner every night at 6:30 there was an evening activity. The activities included a hike in Lynn Canyon, a night at the beach, a barbeque in Stanley Park and a photo scavenger hunt. When we arrived back at church from the evening activity we had a time called ‘club’ where we played some games, sang songs and had a short sermon by one of the staff. To conclude the night, we had a time of reflection in our church groups. Time for sleep finally came at 11:15 when the lights were turned off.

On Friday morning, the 6th, we woke up extra early, said our goodbyes to staff and friends, and left for the aquarium in Stanley Park. From about 11:30 to 3:15 we hung out at the aquarium, watched a cool 4-D show and ordered in pizza. Now it was on to home. We crossed the border again with no problems and ultimately arrived home to the SLC parking lot around 9:30 at night. What a trip!

This was my third mission trip with SLC and my second trip with the YouthWorks organization. In 2008 I went to Tijuana, Mexico, and in 2009 I participated in the ELCA National Youth Gathering in New Orleans, Louisiana. I have thoroughly enjoyed every one of the trips I’ve been on and all the different and varied experiences they have provided me.

Most notably on this trip, I enjoyed the entire set-up of another YouthWorks trip. The schedule was even the same as the trip I took to Mexico, but this did not in any way hinder it from being another great step in my faith journey. While New Orleans provided a great experience in its own way, I find myself seeing it differently than my other two trips. Being in the overwhelming presence of some nineteen thousand Lutheran youth from all over the country gathered in the Super Dome was certainly a powerful and a fulfilling insight into the Lord’s company in our lives, but both Mexico and Vancouver ended up impacting my faith more profoundly.

The central theme, if you will, I took away from this Vancouver trip, was a sense of the importance of Christian fellowship and community. The friendships and closeness that one gains as they share a relationship in Christ while waking up with one another, working next to one another and worshiping together are truly amazing things. Of course, this was not all the trip was about; there was also an element of service that ties nicely into this sense of community. I had the privilege to help plan and participate in a worship service at the Union Gospel Mission during my stay in Vancouver. UGM is a facility that provides programs and aid to drug and alcohol addicts. Offering services varying from rehabilitation programs to affordable housing and safe drop-ins for those who need them, to a thrift store and free lunch, I found the mission a truly impressive place. The chance that I got to share the Lord with a group of men who really needed to hear the Word, a group that filled the chapel facility, was a very unique and fulfilling experience. In this way, I found the most impactful part of this trip to be the feeling of community, not only with the people I served while on the trip, but also the friends I made and the friends I became closer to while in Vancouver.

I highly encourage anyone who gets the chance to participate in a mission or service trip of their own. It often requires one to push themselves outside their comfort zone and hereby leads to a strengthened relationship with Christ.

A final thanks to our chaperones Pastor Jonathan, Robin, Dennis, Ed and Sue for making this trip possible. Thanks as well to those who prayed for me and others while on the trip, we felt your prayers. I would also like to extend my indescribable gratitude to the YouthWorks staff, Kelly, James, Angelos and Jenna.

Our theme, this summer:
“Jesus must become greater, I must become less.”
John 3:30
Jeff Alcock

Upcoming events

PAINTBALL - Friday, August 20th, 10am-3pm. After a brief time back and then a week of vacation, I couldn't wait to post some of the highlights of our trip. Thank you SLC for all of your support in making this possible. It was a really powerful trip for most, if not all, of our youth. Thanks go out as well to our wonderful chaperones - Ed, Robin, Dennis, and Sue. I know Anjali and Jeff Alcock are working on collecting some of the impressions our youth had and will be posting them here as well.

For my part, I was impressed by the whole experience. It was organized well, the worship and devotion time was thoughtful, and the ministry sites were places of real need, offering perspective into the life of one of North America's largest cities. We had opportunities to see some of the most beautiful places in and around Vancouver, and we had even greater opportunity to see beauty in the midst of forgotten people and places. My hats off to the Youthworks staff in Vancouver as well. My special thanks to Angelos, who grew up in a fairly rough part of Vancouver and had all kinds of perspective for us, especially on an individual basis. I know several of our kids are thankful for their conversations with him. Some personal highlights for me were the baptism of Eric Esposito, one of our youth, in the bay just west of Vancouver, and the footwashing and Eucharist on the last night we were there. I also remember hearing some of our youth complain about the kids they served on the first day, only to be saying tearful goodbyes to those same kids on the last day. As usual, I was also very impressed by the maturity of our group as a whole. They certainly made it a delight for me to be a chaperone. Last but most certainly not least...SERIOUS props to Robin Long for being insanely organized and full of fun all at the same time. Next time you see her, say, "Mad props, eh Robin!" Trust me on this one.

Peace,
PJ

Sorry can't post for Vancouver here. They were both at the National Youth Gathering, and are performing for free. $10 required to ride the ferry and for dinner, and then a $20 donation is recommended for world hunger. We meet at church at 11:15am to load up and head for the ferry on Saturday, November 14th and get back about 11:00-11:30 that night, but we have to have our final registration in by November 5th. Sign ups on the SLY Board and in the entry at church, or email PJ. We could still use some parent drivers as well (you'll have a blast too!). Bring a lunch for the ferry ride over and any snacks you might need for the day. You also may consider bringing some spending money for concert souvenirs if you would like.

Leaf Raking is coming up as our first fundraiser for our planned trip to Vancouver, BC. Join the many high schoolers who have signed up, or sign up to drive and help as a parent. Don't forget to get your lawn raked as well. This event happens on November 11th, a school holiday. Contact Jeff Alcock for more details and/or sign up at church.

High School Parents and Guardians

We have had a lot going on in youth ministry this fall, including a lot of growth and transition. It is time for us to get together to make some plans for a new year of ministry together. Robin Long and the new Youth Team are off and running and ready to share some information on this year’s plans, including the summer youth trip, some vision for the near and distant future, new pathways in communication, and more. We need your presence and your input as we gather to be responsive to this growing ministry with you and your kids. We are seeking balance and efficiency as we address the needs of our kids and families in a busy world, and we can’t do that alone. Come join us for lunch after the 11am worship on November 8th in the Fellowship Hall.

Update on Sudan/Darfur

Last Spring, many of you took part in watching a video on the circumstances in Sudan and Darfur, witnessing both atrocities and how people were trying to help. They will have some great workshops from 2-5pm, and then a dinner followed by an AGAPE and Rachel Kurtz concert. This event is geared for 7th-12th graders, and we are encouraging all of our youth to GO! The cost will be $10-17, depending on whether we use the ferry one way or round trip. This covers all travel and dinner costs. Please eat or pack a lunch. Better yet, eat at the Holiday Bazaar before you go! Youth are also STRONGLY encouraged to raise or donate $20 to bring with them to support world hunger. The artists are donating their talents for this lively concert, so all money goes to feed the hungry. We will meet at SLC promptly at 11:15, and return sometime after 11pm that night. The last day to register is November 5th, so act soon. Lots more info at http://www.tlc.edu/community/documents/JJJ%20Detailed%20Information.pdf

Holiday Bazaar
Thanks to all those who signed up to help with the Bazaar at the BIGGY Summit in October. Even if you are going to the youth service/concert event in Everett, you can still help out from 8:30-11am at the church. You can also help by passing out flyers for this event at the Silverdale Albertson’s and Safeway on November 6th and 7th. This has been a great connection over the years between our WELCA and youth group, so lend a hand to make this another successful event.

New News In Confirmation
Part of the Confirmation requirement each year is to turn in 8 Worship/Sermon Notes. That has not changed, but how you can do these has changed significantly. The traditional Worship Notes are still available, but there are three other options. First, you can take notes using the Bubble Mind Maps, which are available next to the Worship Notes. Second, you can interview an adult in the congregation following worship using the Q&A Form also found near the Worship Notes. Third, you can come to an informal session for a half hour after the second worship service in the Youth Room (GP) to talk about the lessons, music, sermon, etc. with Pastor Jonathan or Pastor Bill (starting Nov. 1st). Any one or combination of these four options will fulfill your requirement.

Upcoming Event
Tuesday, December 15th, SLC will be hosting a Blood Drive from 12:00 noon to 6 pm. If you are 18 years old you can donate on your own, but 16-17 year olds may also donate with signed parent permission. You must be at least 110 pounds to donate, so eat lots of turkey and mashed potatoes to prepare. Look for signups coming soon!

YO 'SUP G!?

You like my title? We started the day on a swamp tour with more alligators than you can shake a stick at (if there is a hot dog on the end of it, that is). Then we headed to the beach for some swimming and fun in white sand and warm water. We had several run-ins with jellyfish, but overall a great visit to the coast. It is amazing how many vacant lots there are on the Mississippi Gulf Coast from houses that were blown over or washed away and have not been rebuilt. Of course, the casinos are being rebuilt, but there is much more to do.

Tomorrow is a quick half day of work before heading off to a souvenir shop and a tour of the Ninth Ward. We fly out tomorrow - Thursday. As the kids are invited deeper and deeper into the lives of the people around them, we pray the pattern of service will become a lifelong habit for them. As one youth said tonight, "My low today is that we are going home in two days. I really like this service thing and I want to do more." Tonight our trip to the 9th Ward was postponed because of a huge thunderstorm moving through the area. We will get a chance to be there on our way to the airport Thursday afternoon.

Tomorrow we hit the swamp and then the beach for a much needed rest day. Pray for the rain to move out quickly and the sun to be merciful.

Meaningful Work in Slidell

My eyes are being held open with toothpicks as I write this blog. Most here are physically and emotionally exhausted from a lot of great work and an amazing presentation tonight from a local woman who was flooded out of her community. She had about 30 years of roots, memories, and community that washed away in exactly 11 minutes. We asked, "What can we do?" and the answer came quite simply, "LISTEN." The incredible perspective on life that comes from the deep pain of losing one's identity is something I doubt any here will soon forget. And the ability to share that story in Christian community was healing for our storyteller as well.

We have come to Slidell after - to say the least - a mountaintop experience in New Orleans. Our stomachs have been pampered, our worship life enlivened, and our conga line and mosh pit needs fulfilled. The message there was clear - as a valuable member of Christ's body, we are to live out our calling in mission for the good of the world. Like a living and breathing transfiguration, New Orleans provided a glowing and awesome Christ. Now in Slidell, we have come down from the mountain to face the deep need for healing that is present in those around us, and even in we ourselves. Tomorrow the kids are jazzed for another hard day of God's work, culminating in tomorrow night's visit to the 9th Ward for a crab and shrimp feed. Then a day of rest on Wednesday at the Honey Island Swamp and Mississippi beach. Have their beds ready when they get home! They will be tired! But oh what great kids they are!

Finally a POST!

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
We finally have a place and a moment to send you a post. We have been having a fabulous time down here in the Big Easy. Our trip went very smoothly, and our time here has been abundantly full. We have eaten great food, heard a fantastic classic jazz quintet in one of the oldest buildings in the city, and we have served to beautify a recreation center on the north shore of Lake Ponchatrain. Are you following the Gathering's nightly events? If not - just do it. They stream live starting at 4:30 pm in Silverdale. The speakers have been filling these kids with God's message of grace and the bands and performers are truly inspirational. And worship this morning - indescribably good.

Everyone is tired but inspired, and these kids are the greatest anyone could ask for! They have been amazing troopers even when they don't agree with us old fuddy duddy chaperones. Good job parents and congregation for raising them up in the way that they should go.
